These exhibits serve a variety of venues in order to reach West Virginians wherever they gather. Our award-winning exhibits have appeared in museums, libraries, historic properties, and colleges as well as community centers, farmers markets, court houses, bank lobbies, fire stations, fast food restaurants, office buildings, and hospitals. They are available at no charge to suitable organizations and often serve as a catalyst for additional programming. Organizations must arrange for transport from the previous display site or pick up from the Council's offices in Charleston.
Call 304.346.8500 or email warmack@wvhumanities.org for further information.
The Council commissions or creates in-house exhibits addressing West Virginia topics. For broader topics of general American interest, we supplement our offerings with print-on-demand material from reputable institutions such as the Smithsonian or U.S. military historical branches. See the list below for our current slate.
Flagship exhibits tell big stories! They require dedicated display space and several people to set up.
Born of Rebellion – 400-500 square feet of display space required. 3 people required for setup. Our largest exhibit, Born of Rebellion covers West Virginia’s complicated journey to statehood during the Civil War. Made possible with generous funding from American Water and the NEH’s A More Perfect Union initiative. See the page at right for more details! Special note: Born of Rebellion is currently on its debut tour. Contact Program Officer Kyle Warmack to inquire.
American Blood Feud: The Hatfields and McCoys – 300-400 square feet of display space required. 2-3 people required for setup. Developed by the West Virginia Humanities Council and illustrated by West Virginia University graphic design students with financial support from ZMM Architects and Engineers, this traveling exhibit relates the history of the events that have become synonymous with the word feud.
Our micro-exhibits require minimal transport and set up. One person can easily handle all materials, and the displays will fit in tighter spaces such as libraries, lobbies, or small museums.
Several micro-exhibits will be available soon! Check back here for information.
